Spring time in the Vineyard

Greetings from farmer Bill at Maize Valley!  We are located in Northeast Ohio near the small town of Hartville, Ohio.  It has been a very mild winter and spring looks to be the same so far.

At Maize Valley we say we make great wine fun and have a vintage for all the seasons of your life. To get great Ohio Wine we have to grow the crop first and that starts early in the year. Our vineyard and grapes are a big part of the local fresh produce we grow on the farm.

Back in the day we got started our Corn Maze, Pumpkin Picking, Hay rides and oh my has it grown. On March 17th we celebrate the 7th anniversary of our winery. But this year the temps are a bit warm for early March. We’ll keep you posted but temps are supposed to be in the 60’s next week as well and that is not good.

Now don’t get me wrong, I ain’t a big fan of snow unless I’m on a pair of ski’s, but it has been wet and not too cold this winter. If it stays this warm too long the grapes will wake up and we could get a early bud break. That is when the buds come out of their protective winter coverings in part of the vine cane and start to get ready to grow. Not so good if a frost comes along and freezes them off.

So for now we’ll keep an eye on them a not get in to big a hurry to prune in case we need more of the cane to keep more buds.

New this year at the local CVCC winter farmers market will be a crop of fresh radishes.

If you have never had the chance to go into a greenhouse on a cold winter day, I’m sorry. It is hard to describe. It is not so much just the heat, the getting in out of the cold is the obvious part.

I guess it is the smell of “concentrated life” about to explode, almost a tropical buzz is around you. It’s something like sauna with rich humidity filling your senses and touching your skin but with the rich aroma of potting soil and the stark green colors you find as you enter this plastic oasis, briefly escaping the cold “Negative Photograph” world of winter on the outside.

It’s what living on a farm is all about I guess, as we try new things to adapt to what the market gives us.

At the top of the page you can see my lovely wife Michelle bundling our fresh from the field Asparagus. I asked her to smile for the camera and she insisted on displaying just one of the spears?

Right next to where the gang was planting onions I spotted our Asparagus. They told me the other day it was ready to cut. You need to stay after it and not let it go to seed if you want to keep it going. It takes Asparagus a few years to really get going and this is it’s second year in the ground and our first harvest.

Did you know that has been cultivated for thousands of years and it was first domesticated by the Macedonians about 200 B.C. Check out the following link to learn more than you ever wanted to know about it.

Todd our wine maker cut some fresh this morning and we are serving it as a special in the winery this weekend. And NO we are not going to make an Asparagus wine!
